B A C K G R O U N D
Shadow was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 19th, 1989 to a then single mother, Leigh-Anne Porter. Leigh-Anne was 20 at the time and working as a bar maid. Four years later, her mother married a 32-year-old journalist named Greg Clark, who adopted Shadow soon after. When Shadow was five, Leigh-Anne and Greg had a child together, a half-sister for Shadow named Cecilia.

A week after Shadow's eleventh birthday, Greg died from a heart-attack. Her mother grew distant and Shadow was left to take care of her younger sister. As if that wasn't enough responsibility for her, a woman came to her in a series of dreams explaining to her that she'd been given a gift - the ability to walk among others' dreams while she slept.

With that new power came an additional responsibility, though. Whilst in someone's dream, she must use their own subconscious to coax the dream into a nightmare, something that will make them feel fear. Because her gift also connects her to an entity known as True Darkness, a being without a solid form that inhabits the land of dreams and feeds off of human fear, anxiety, and panic. Though this job isn't pleasant, it is necessary. If she shirks this duty, the powerful entity will seep into the daylight world and snatch from a human not just the fear and anxiety it hungers for, but also their life.

The dreams she's thrust into are chosen at random. Generally, they're dreams of those around the same age as her. Or she thought so when she was a child, as it was mostly other children's dreams she'd find herself in. As she grew though, it became a mixture of those younger and those around the same age, and on occasion someone much older. She's never been told why.

Shadow has a soft spot for children and animals (specifically cats). She loves baking, and occasionally cooking. She also loves to read but has a tendency to read too many books at once and lose her place, thus it takes her a while to actually finish one. While she prefers rainy days and snowy days to sunny days, she does love to swim, so at least she can do that while living in California.

She hates spiders and all things creepy-crawly. She dislikes those who are exceptionally arrogant. She also isn't fond of being out-right hit on - some clever flirting she can handle, but otherwise expect some rolling of the eyes, some pursed lips, or her just plain walking away from you.
